This handbook's an invaluable guide for crew training for the world renowned Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. Written by Mark Burkes, a veteran of three Clipper Round the World Races (crew in 2011/12, relief race skipper in 2013/14 and race skipper in 2019/20) and an RYA Yachtmaster™ Ocean Instructor and former Clipper Training Skipper, this guide is a concise handbook, packed with useful information and crew hacks.
Mark has 200,000 miles logged over 35 years. In 2011, he crewed in his first Clipper Race, sailing on four different race boats as a roaming first mate. He moved from boat to boat and thus experienced various skippering styles and crew dynamics. Experiencing everything from a severe knockdown in the North Pacific to a 'whirly-bird', 100 feet up the rig in the Southern Ocean, Mark has plenty of tales and associated advice to share with the budding ocean racer. |
On his return, Mark became a Clipper Training Skipper and then, in 2013/14, he was drafted in to skipper Team Garmin from Albany in Western Australia to Singapore. He also skippered the iconic Rolex Sydney Hobart Race. In 2018, he trained the winning British Invictus crew in the Sydney Hobart Race and subsequently trained and skippered the crew of WTC Logistics. He skippered WTC (CV23), a Tony Castro-designed Clipper 70, from London to Fremantle in 2019. He's also crewed and skippered the Rolex Fastnet Race three times and crewed in a variety of iconic regattas and races around the world.
